SYNOPSIS
 No one knew it at the time, but this was the beginning of what became-known as the Tiger Slam. Woods had never won a U.S. Open but this 100th renewal at Pebble Beach turned out to be the perfect venue as he opened with a 65 and was never headed. His one-stroke lead grew to six after a second-round 69 and Woods eventually won by 15 shots -- the largest margin in major championship history -- after closing with a 67. He was the first player to finish the U.S. Open with a double-digit under-par total and his score of 12 under was the lowest relative to par by three strokes. On the weekend, Woods led the field in driving distance, hit 73.2 percent of the fairways, 70.8 percent of the greens in regulation and averaged just 27 putts. "It seems like we're not playing in the same ballpark right now," said Ernie Els, who tied for second with Miguel Angel Jimenez. "(Tiger's) phenomenal, and that's an understatement, probably."
