SYNOPSIS
 Tiger Woods came to Maui in January after winning his last four PGA TOUR events of 1999. A second-round 66 as the winds whipped Kapalua vaulted the game's No. 1 player into a four-stroke lead. But Ernie Els closed the gap with a 67 on Saturday that left the two tied entering the final 18 holes. The duel on Sunday was sensational, with both players making eagle on the 18th hole to keep the battle alive. Woods had to make an 8-foot birdie on the first extra hole and then seized the victory with a 40-footer on the second. "I felt so sorry for Ernie," said Woods' swing coach Butch Harmon. "He played better than Tiger the last two days, but that's golf. Two gladiators going at it with the best they've got."
